Joaquin Capa was born in Santander in 1941. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Madrid. He also studied Philosophy (in Rome and Madrid), Architecture (in Madrid) and Sociology of Art (in Paris).

He received scholarships from the Juan March Foundation (1975 and 1976) and from the Ministry of Culture (1983 and 1984).

He maintains a close relationship with India, where he has been a visiting professor at the University of Baroda (1983, 1989 and 1990) and where he was awarded the Prize at the 1st International Biennale at Bhopal.
